1970년대를 풍미한 미국의 프로그레시브(Progressive Rock) 록 밴드 'Kansas'가 1977년에 발표한 불후의 명곡 'Dust in the Wind'. 멜라니 사프카(Melanie Safka) 버전은 그녀가 2000년대(2002년 앨범 Moments From My Life 등)에 특유의 허스키하고 호소력 짙은 음색으로 재해석하여 부른 커버 곡이다.

 

이 곡은 원곡의 철학적인 깊이에 Melanie의 독보적인 포크 감성이 더해져 깊은 여운을 주는 곡으로 원곡이 가진 장엄하고 서정적인 프로그레시브 록의 느낌을 어쿠스틱 포크로 정제해 냈다. 'The Saddest Thing'으로 큰 사랑을 받았던 'Melanie' 특유의 허스키 보이스와 창법은 이 곡의 허무주의적 메시지를 극대화한다.

 

Kansas의 원곡이 정교한 트래비스 피킹(Travis Picking) 기타와 화려한 바이올린으로 꽉 찬 사운드라면, 'Melanie' 버전은 목소리와 기타 위주의 담백한 구성으로 "결국 우리는 모두 바람 속의 먼지일 뿐"이라는 노랫말을 읊조리며 인생 황혼기의 쓸쓸함과 초연함을 독백 형식으로 표현하고 있다.
