'Deep Purple'은 1968년 결성된 영국의 Hard Rock Band로 초기 멤버는 Ritchie Blackmore(기타), Jon Lord(키보드), Nick Simper(베이스), Ian Paice(드럼), Rod Evans(보컬)였다. 이후 여러 차례 멤버 교체를 거치면서 다양한 음악적 변화를 시도했고, 1973년 David Coverdale이 보컬로 합류하면서 새로운 사운드를 선보였다.

 

1974년 12월 발매한 앨범 'Stormbringer'에 수록된 'Soldier of Fortune'은 Blues Rock ballad로 기타리스트 'Ritchie Blackmore'와 보컬리스트 'David Coverdale'이 공동 작곡했으며 David Coverdale이 노래했다. 이 곡은 싱글로 발매되거나 차트에 오르지는 않았지만 감성적인 멜로디와 서정적인 가사로 큰 인기를 얻었으며 여러 아티스트들에 의해 커버되었다.

 

'Deep Purple'은 'Hard Rock과 Heavy Metal' 장르의 선구자로 평가받는다. 전 세계적으로 1억 장 이상의 앨범을 판매한 그룹으로 2016년에는 'Rock and Roll Hall of Fame'에 헌액되었다. 'Soldier of Fortune'은 'Deep Purple'의 음악적 다양성과 감성적인 면모를 잘 보여주는 곡으로 지금까지도 많은 사람들에게 사랑받고 있다.

 

한 인간의 방황하는 삶, 외로움, 그리고 운명을 따르는 이야기를 담고 있는 'Soldier of Fortune'은 2015년 David Coverdale이 이끄는 밴드 'Whitesnake'이 앨범 'The Purple Albu'에서 리메이크했고, 2023년에는 리믹스 버전을 발표하기도 했다. 내가 군에 입대하기 전 가사를 외워 흥얼거리기도 했던 이 곡은 2016년 11월 20일 블로그에 게시한 (클릭 ☞)'커피에 관한 안좋은 추억'의 소재이기도 하다.
