1949년, 미국 Alabama 주 Tuskegee에서 태어난 Lionel Brockman Richie Jr.는 가수 겸 작곡가, 프로듀서로 활동했다. 1960년대 후반, 그룹 Commodores 창립 멤버로 색소폰, 피아노 연주와 뛰어난 노래 실력을 바탕으로 성공을 거두었고, 1980년대에는 솔로로 활동하면서 'Endless Love', 'Lady', 'Hello'와 같은 Soulful 한 Love Ballad 음악으로 명성을 얻었다. 

 

그룹 Commodores을 탈퇴하기 전 'Easy', 'Sail On', 'Three Times a Lady', 'Still' 등을 작곡, 녹음했으며 1980년 Kenny Rogers(2020년 3월 20일 사망)의 'Lady'를 작곡, 프로듀싱했다. 1981년 Diana Ross와 듀엣으로 녹음한 싱글 'Endless Love'를 작곡, 프로듀싱했으며, 이 곡은 역대 베스트셀러 20위권에 속한 히트곡으로 남아 있다.

 

1982년 솔로 활동을 시작하면서 발매한 'Lionel Richie'에는 'You Are', 'My Love' 'Truly'가 수록되었고 이 앨범은 400만 장 이상 판매되었다. 1983년 두 번째 앨범 'Can't Slow Down'은 미국 빌보드 200 차트에서 1위를 했고 전 세계적으로 2천만 장 이상 판매된 역대 가장 많이 팔린 앨범으로 'All Night Long (All Night)'과 'Hello'가 수록되어 있다.

 

1985년 Michael Jackson(2009년 6월 25일 사망)과 공동 작곡한 'We Are the World'는 2천만 장 이상 판매되었고, 세 번째 앨범 Dancing on the Ceiling(1986년)에는 'Say You, Say Me(1985년 영화 White Nights에 삽입)'가 수록되었다. Lionel Richie는 1986년부터 1996년까지 녹음을 중단했지만 이후 7장의 앨범을 발표하기도 했다.

 

1980년대 가장 성공한 발라드 가수로 1억 장이 넘는 음반을 판매해 가장 많은 앨범이 팔린 아티스트 중 한 명인 Lionel Richie는 'We Are the World'로 올해의 노래상, 'Can't Slow Down'으로 올해의 앨범상을 포함 Grammy Awards를 4번 수상했다. 'Endless Love'는 아카데미상 후보에, 'Say You, Say Me'로 아카데미상과 골든 글로브상을 수상하기도 했다.
